Consumer Group Opposes Hemp Deadline Extension Without Regulation

The National Consumers League says Congress should let the 2025 hemp restrictions take effect on December 11 unless a regulatory system is in place first.

Key Facts

NATIONAL, October 10, 2026: The National Consumers League urged Congress on October 8 not to extend the federal hemp deadline again unless lawmakers first put a regulatory framework for hemp-derived products in place, according to The Marijuana Herald.

The consumer advocacy group said the restrictions adopted in 2025 should take effect on the current December 11, 2026 date unless a "robust regulatory regime for hemp-derived products" exists by then, according to the report. The statement was titled as a call on Congress to establish a regulatory system for hemp-derived beverages before extending the deadline.

The League cited intoxicating hemp products sold as beverages, gummies and vapes, packaging that it said appeals to minors, availability at convenience stores and gas stations, accidental consumption by children, and reported increases in poison control and emergency department cases involving hemp-derived THC, The Marijuana Herald reported. The League did not specify potency limits, labeling rules or other provisions it wants Congress to adopt, according to the report.

The position puts the group at odds with beverage industry and alcohol wholesaler backers of pending bills, including the Beverage Regulatory Parity Act, that would keep hemp THC drinks legal under an alcohol-style system. That bill remains in committee, and a Senate framework bill from Sens. Tim Sheehy and Amy Klobuchar has been reported as forthcoming but had not been introduced as of this report.
